Description
This project was a contract with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) from 2001-2003 to assist with the development of congressionally mandated demonstration projects that seek to reduce racial/ethnic disparities in cancer prevention, treatment and outcomes. The project included a large scale systematic review of the scientific literature, case studies, and development of options for project design, management, and evaluation. By law CMS is required to develop at least nine demonstrations, including eight projects that address African Americans, Latinos, Asian Americans, and American Indian/ Alaskan Native beneficiary populations living in both urban and rural communities, and a project in Guam. From 2001-2003, a large and diverse team from the Schneider Institute for Health Policy conducted a thorough review of evidence and provided guidance to CMS on the design of these demonstrations. The project sought to identify concepts and models that have a high probability of reducing risk.
