Description
The 2003 Brandeis Survey continued to add to the knowledge base by providing a current picture of the complex and changing organization of behavioral health services in today's health care markets, with a particular focus on new developments since 1999. We addressed three issues: (1) How commercial health plans - including health maintenance organizations (HMOs), preferred provider organizations (PPOs), point-of-service (POS) plans, and the new consumer-driven plans - currently provide substance abuse and mental health services. (2) Why some plans provide behavioral health services directly while others "carve out" these services (have them provided by MBHOs or other specialty vendors). (3) How health plans' behavioral health arrangements have changed since 1999, and what are the most salient new developments.
